Leak Detection in Gas Storage Well

Challenge

The operator of the UK’s largest gas storage facility identified tubing to ‘A’ annulus connectivity in a key injector / producer well.  The precise location of the leak needed to be determined and a plug set, above an existing plug, to permit a successful tubing integrity pressure test.  Only a very short interval (<3 feet) within which to set the plug was available and the setting depth was in excess of 9,000 ft

 

Solution

The leak detection survey was achieved by a 40-arm Multi-Finger Caliper (MFC) and Production Logging Tools (PLT). Multiple passes through a 5” tubular and the completion components accurately pinpointed the leak. The high-resolution MFC identified a clean depth interval where the retrievable PrimePlug could be set. Careful depth control was imperative to successfully set the plug.   Together with this leading technology, the success of the operation was strengthened by the excellent communication between the wellsite, Altus Intervention and client offices.

 

Results

The MFC runs indicated the lower tubing and completion equipment were in good condition with very minor corrosion and scale; however, the high-resolution PLT temperature surveys identified a subtle but repeated temperature anomaly at the packer. Subsequent MFC surveys located a 3-foot interval and the PrimePlug was successfully set with a dedicated setting tool and careful depth control.
